An Incredible Journey Through the Heart of Europe

Experience Europe’s iconic cities, storybook villages, and meaningful moments along the Danube

Some trips are memorable… others stay with you.

Rose and I recently experienced the Romantic Danube with AmaWaterways, and it quickly became one of those journeys we’ll never forget. From the storybook villages to the grand cities filled with history, music, and culture, every day felt like stepping into something special.

But what stood out most wasn’t just the places—it was the pace, the connection, and the experience itself.

That’s why we’ve secured a limited amount of group space for this same sailing in July 2027—giving you access to better value and personal guidance along the way.

While we won’t be traveling on this departure, we’ll be here to help you experience it the same way we did… relaxed, meaningful, and truly unforgettable.

Welcome to Europe - Embarkation in Vilshofen, Germany

Your journey begins in the charming Bavarian town of Vilshofen, where you’ll step aboard your beautiful AmaWaterways ship and settle in for the week ahead.

One of the first things Rose and I noticed—and really loved—was how relaxed everything felt. With around 150 guests, there are no long lines, no crowds… just a smooth, welcoming start that immediately feels different from a large ocean cruise.

After settling into your stateroom, you may find yourself heading up to the top deck, taking in your first views of the Danube, and realizing you’ve officially slowed down. It’s a quiet moment—but one that sticks with you.

That evening, the journey really begins.

You’ll be welcomed with a reception and then enjoy a fun Oktoberfest-style celebration—complete with local beer, pretzels, music, and a chance to start connecting with others on board. It’s relaxed, it’s welcoming, and it just feels easy.

And that’s what makes this first day so special.

It’s not just about boarding the ship…

It’s about stepping into a completely different pace of travel—one that feels personal, meaningful, and enjoyable from the very beginning.

Storybook Streets & Timeless Beauty

Today you arrive in the beautiful town of Passau—often called the “City of Three Rivers,” where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet.

This was one of those stops Rose and I really enjoyed. And one of the first things that stood out… we walked right off the ship and were in the heart of the old town within minutes. No long drives, no waiting—just step off and start exploring.

It’s the kind of place that feels like you’ve stepped into a postcard… colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and a relaxed pace that invites you to take it all in.

One of the things that made this experience even better was our local guide. She knew everything about the city—its history, its stories, and the little details you’d never pick up on your own—and led us through some truly incredible spots along the way. It made the whole experience feel deeper and more meaningful.

One of the highlights here is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world. Standing inside, you can’t help but pause for a moment—it’s both beautiful and humbling.

As you explore, you’ll notice how easy everything feels. Whether you’re walking through the old town, joining a guided tour, or simply finding a quiet café, there’s no rush… just time to experience it.

That’s something we kept coming back to on this journey—

you’re not just seeing these places… you’re actually enjoying them.

By the time you return to the ship, you’ll already start to feel the rhythm of river cruising—unpack once, explore incredible places, and come back to a space that now feels familiar.

Choose Your Adventure

Today is one of those days that really highlights what makes this journey so special—you get to experience it your way.

You’ll arrive in Linz, Austria, with several incredible options to choose from. Some guests choose to explore Linz itself, while others take a full-day excursion to places like Salzburg or the storybook village of Český Krumlov.

Rose and I chose to visit Český Krumlov, and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences of the trip.

It truly feels like stepping back in time… winding cobblestone streets, a stunning castle overlooking the river, and charming little shops and cafés around every corner. It’s one of those places that doesn’t even feel real until you’re standing there in it.

We also had a wonderful local guide who brought the whole place to life—sharing stories, history, and little details that made the experience so much more meaningful than just walking through on our own.

After some time exploring, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch at a small local café—one of those simple moments that just sticks with you.

And then, as the day winds down, you return to the ship… where everything is waiting for you. No packing, no moving hotels—just step back on board and continue the journey.

That’s one of the things we loved most about river cruising…

you can have these incredible, immersive experiences during the day, and still come “home” to the same place each evening.

Scenic Beauty & Historic Wonder

Today is one of those days you’ll remember for a long time.

Your morning begins in Melk, home to the stunning Melk Abbey—perched high above the Danube and visible long before you arrive. It’s one of the most impressive sites along the river, and walking through it feels like stepping into history.

Rose and I were blown away by both the beauty and the detail—from the grand architecture to the incredible views overlooking the river below. It’s one of those places that makes you pause and take it all in.

Later in the day, the experience shifts in a completely different—but equally memorable—way.

As the ship sails through the Wachau Valley, this is where you’ll want to find a spot on the top deck. This stretch of the Danube is absolutely beautiful… rolling vineyards, charming villages, and castles that seem to appear around every bend.

This was one of our favorite parts of the entire trip.

There’s nothing you have to do… nowhere you have to be…

Just sit back, take it all in, and enjoy the moment as the scenery slowly passes by.

It’s peaceful, it’s scenic, and it’s exactly what makes river cruising so special.

Culture, Music & Timeless Elegance

Today you arrive in Vienna—a city that just feels elegant the moment you step into it.

From the grand architecture to the historic streets, there’s a richness here that you can see and feel everywhere you go.

Rose and I spent the day exploring both the city center and the old town, taking in the incredible buildings and just enjoying the atmosphere. It’s one of those places where you don’t feel rushed… you just move from one beautiful spot to the next.

One of our favorite parts of the day was visiting the local markets. There’s something about walking through them—seeing the colors, tasting the food, and experiencing the culture—that makes it all feel so real and personal.

We also had the chance to visit the Strauss House, where we learned more about his life and music through a really interactive and engaging experience. And later, enjoying live classical music in Vienna… that’s just something special. It connects you to the city in a completely different way.

And of course, we can’t forget the food—

some of the best we had on the trip. From a warm bowl of tomato soup to traditional Wiener schnitzel, it was one of those meals you don’t forget.

By the end of the day, Vienna leaves an impression.

It’s not just what you see…

It’s how it makes you feel while you’re there.

A New Country & A Different Rhythm

Today you wake up in a new country—Slovakia—and arrive in the capital city of Bratislava.

That was one of the things we loved about this journey… in just a few days, you’re experiencing multiple countries, cultures, and perspectives—each one a little different from the last.

Bratislava has a completely different feel than Vienna. It’s a bit more relaxed, a little quieter, and incredibly charming in its own way.

As you step off the ship, you’re once again right in the heart of the city, making it easy to start exploring right away. Walking through the old town, you’ll find colorful buildings, open squares, cafés, and little details that make you want to slow down and look around.

We really enjoyed just taking it all in—wandering the streets, listening to our guide share stories about the city, and discovering places we never would have found on our own.

Looking up, you’ll see Bratislava Castle sitting high above the city, offering a beautiful backdrop and a reminder of the history that surrounds you.

It’s not a big, overwhelming stop… and that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

It’s simple, it’s relaxed, and it’s another great example of how this journey lets you experience each place in a way that feels personal and unhurried.

A Grand Finale on the Danube

Today you arrive in Budapest—and it’s the kind of place that immediately takes your breath away.

This city feels grand in every sense of the word. From the moment you see the Parliament building along the river to the views from Fisherman’s Bastion overlooking the city, it’s one incredible scene after another.

Rose and I spent a full day here, and it was one of the highlights of the entire trip.

We explored both sides of the city—Buda and Pest—each with its own unique feel. Walking through the streets, taking in the architecture, and learning the history from our guide made it all come alive in a really meaningful way.

But what truly sets Budapest apart… is seeing it from the river.

As evening comes, the city lights begin to glow, and everything along the Danube is illuminated. This was one of those moments we’ll never forget—standing on the top deck, watching the city come to life around us.

It’s hard to describe until you experience it for yourself.

It’s not just beautiful…

It’s emotional, memorable, and the perfect way to wrap up an incredible journey.

Until Next Time - Disembark in Budapest

This morning, your journey comes to an end in Budapest—but it won’t feel like the end.

After a week of incredible experiences, meaningful moments, and new connections, it’s one of those times where you find yourself reflecting on everything you’ve seen and experienced along the way.

Rose and I felt the same way.

Even the disembarkation was incredibly smooth and easy—just like the rest of the trip. Our cruise manager even arranged our taxi to the train station as we were heading on to Munich, which was just another example of how well everything is taken care of for you.

There’s something about this kind of journey that just stays with you…

the places, the people, the pace, and all those little moments in between.

As you step off the ship for the final time, you’ll carry home more than just photos.

You’ll carry the memories of walking through storybook towns, experiencing new cultures, and seeing Europe in a way that feels personal and unhurried.

And for many, it’s not just the end of a trip…

It’s the beginning of thinking about where to go next.
